Harry Stone project featured in Texas IB School Newsletter

Harry Stone’s MYP 3 (IB Middle Year Program, 3rd year, or 8th grade) student community projects were highlighted in this Fall’s Texas IB Schools newsletter.

From the newsletter:

Community Project Sparks Community Action

Last year’s MYP 3 students, Makayla, Ashanti and Kenethia rebuilt Harry Stone’s butterfly garden. The year before that, Angel, Carlos and Sebastian organized a Blood Drive on campus through Carter Blood Care. This year, students are largely focusing on the less fortunate members of our local community including Dachshunds.

Stone is fortunate to have dedicated, motivated, and outstanding examples of student leaders promoting civic action. Without the IB program, we would not have this valuable learning experience for our students on a school-wide basis. And because we are a Pre K through MYP 3 campus, our students are role models for our younger students.

Harry Stone students enjoy eye-opening trip to the Dallas Arboretum

Harry Stone students’ experience at the Dallas Arboretum was featured in this week’s Dallas ISD News. See the full story here.

The numbers are in, and Harry Stone is rocking!

As Harry Stone’s students and staff continue their journey toward excellence, they have hit a number of truly significant landmarks.

Note: This is my interpretation of the data, and may contain inaccuracies. At the bottom are links to the raw data for those interested.

Our students’ STAAR results from 2017 testing (2016-17 End of Course tests) place Harry Stone at or above the top 10% mark for all schools in the district in most STAAR test areas, from 3rd grade through 8th grade.

For 4th and 5th grades, there were significant year over year improvements. The 4th grade hit 3rd or 4th in the district on all tests, with jump in Reading of 28% of students on Met Standard (more than doubled the year before) and 22% on Mastered, in Math of 37% on Met and 31% on Mastered, and in Writing of 32% on Met. The 5th grade made 6th and 7th in Reading and Math. They also had strong improvements, with Reading Mastered improving by 21% of the students, Math Mastered by 26%, and Science Met by 26%.

The middle school group really shone, ranking 1st in the district in a number of areas:

  • 6th Grade Math
  • 7th Grade Reading
  • 7th Grade Writing
  • 8th Grade Reading
  • 8th Grade Math (which is actually Stone’s 7th Grade)

The middle school’s results also showed a number of areas of steady or significant improvement year-to-year, and on those test where they didn’t hit the top slot they were solidly ranked in with Dallas’s other Magnet middle schools.

Texas Employment Agency also just released results for the Preliminary 2017 Accountability Ratings, and Harry Stone’s elementary has 5 of the 6 possible Distinctions, and the middle school got 7 of 7, one of only 30 at all levels in all of DISD, and only 400 in Texas!

To our students, teachers, and staff: These results show the entire district that you are great. We applaud you. Keep it up, and keep striving for excellence.

Stone one of TEA 14 high performing schools in DISD

According to the DISD Hub article published November 4, Harry Stone has been named by the Texas Education Agency as one of 14 high performing Title I schools in Dallas ISD, and one of only 160 state-wide. This ranking was based on data from the 2014-15 school year.

Fourteen district schools receive high-performing designation

Title I Reward High-performing/high-progress

Harry Stone has been confirmed as Title I Reward school for both lower and middle grades. Congratulations to both the staff and students! See the list linked below for the TEA list, where Harry Stone is listed in both the 2014-15 High-performance and High-progress schools.

On April 30, 2015, the Texas Education Agency announced the more than 400 Title I Reward high-performing and/or high-progress Title I schools for school year 2014-15.  A high-performing reward school is identified as a Title I school with distinctions based on reading and math performance, as well as the highest graduation rates at the high school level.  A high‐progress school is identified as a Title I school in the top 25% in annual improvement and/or schools in the top 25% of those demonstrating ability to close performance gaps based on system safeguards.

Schools must meet, or exceed, the AMO targets of 79% on each of the system safeguards evaluated for all students and all subgroups, including the seven federally required student groups in math and reading subject areas.  Your school did meet the reward criteria and is now identified as a high progress and/or high performing reward school.

On May 26, 2015, the agency updated the 2014-15 reward list found at:  http://tea.texas.gov/Student_Testing_and_Accountability/Monitoring_and_Interventions/School_Improvement_and_Support/Priority,_Focus,_and_Reward_Schools/
